1959? It was a very good year…

Mr George Legacy is coming.

While he sounds like a US congressman, the reality is, frankly, so much more appealing. Mr George Legacy 1959 – to give the full name – is the latest release from Gordon & MacPhail’s in their annual series celebrating the legacy of George Urquhart, the man regarded by many as “the father of single malt”.

The 63-year old whisky was distilled on Thursday 15th October 1959, by the Glen Grant Distillery, and matured in cask 3665, a first-fill sherry butt, and is the company’s last cask from that decade. Remarkably, it comes at a cask strength of 56.5% ABV, and Gordon & MacPhail promise “a rich and complex dram, that retains a subtle smokiness not found in modern Speyside whiskies.”

There are 368 bottles available, and each comes with a genealogy chart on the label, box and certificate. As George – or “Mr George” as he was known – was a firm believer in the guiding principles of fairness, understanding, the importance of community and planning, these guiding principles are also highlighted on the chart.

The Mr George Legacy 1959 is available now, priced at £6,499 a bottle.
