Through the unassuming entrance and down the gilded stairway, the dark mezzanine bar at Quaglino’s is the perfect setting for its Prohibition-themed afternoon Tea.

The black trays delicately balanced on a gold frame offer a selection on classic tea-time favourites hop over to here. Think mini sandwiches, scones, berry tarts and macaroons. All to be enjoyed with your choice from a selection of aromatic herbal teas. Blackcurrant and Hibiscus felt fragrantly appropriate for the occasion.

There are, of course, the prerequisite Prohibition-themed Bourbon and Gin cocktails served in flasks and tin cans, shrouded in secrecy. In the absence of Jazz/Swing music that graces such fancy dress soirées across London, these add the much-needed twist to what would otherwise be a more glamorous version of the celebrated British Tea.

This may well be a fine pit stop for a lazy afternoon in Mayfair with your chosen one following a visit to the Royal Academy of Arts. Or for an informal business meeting. But something tells me it will come to life in the private rooms with music, costumes and an upgrade to a glass of champagne or two.
